On the table…
Sunday 14thOctober 2012.
Stockport A team cruised their way to five straight match wins in this season’s opening Day 1 of the table tennis National Cadet League. All competitors are under the age of 15 years. Played at the Halton Table Tennis Centre in Widnes a full day’s play took place. Staring for the A team were Callum Gordon, William Gregson & Charlie Ainsworth.
The B team squad comprised of Tom Cheung, Jacob & Max Schafheutle-Evans and Will Woodall.
‘A’ team results:
1) STOCKPORT ‘A’ 5 v STOCKPORT ‘B’ 1
2) STOCKPORT ‘A’ 6 v HALTON ‘D’ 0 w/o
3) DENBIGH 2 v STOCKPORT ‘A’ 4
4) WIRRAL 0 v STOCKPORT ‘A’ 6
5) STOCKPORT ‘A’ 6 v HILLCOURT 0
Stockport has advanced this year by fielding two teams as opposed to just the single team last season.
Max played the set of the day against Jack from Warrington. Two evenly matched players both with no previous match experience. The set see-sawed one way then the other neither one of them would give an inch. At one point Max was 8 – 10 down and staring defeat in the face! It got to deuce in the fifth game when Max held his nerve to hold firm and win. This win earned Stockport B Team a 3 - 3 draw - well done to Max.
‘B’ team results:
1) STOCKPORT 5 ‘A’ v STOCKPORT ‘B’ 1
2) RAMSBOTTON 6 v STOCKPORT ‘B’ 0
3) STOCKPORT ‘B’ 4 v HALTON ‘C’ 2
4) STOCKPORT ‘B’ 0 v RHYL 6
5) WARRINGTON ‘B’ 3 v STOCKPORT ‘B’ 3
Only one of Stockport’s players had any previous match experience.
“We try to play the game of table tennis as it should be played fast, attacking and crowd pleasing! We have our sights set high and as long as we put in more hard work on the practice tables things are looking rosy for this new season” said head coach David Hulme.
Day 2 takes place on Sunday 18thNovember2012.
